Best for

  • iPad as your main computer

Headroom for heavy multitasking, an external display at up to 5K and 120 Hz, and fast Thunderbolt storage.

  • Photo and video editing

The best display for color work, up to 2 TB of storage and the fastest exports on any iPad.

  • Drawing and illustration

Apple Pencil Pro with hover, on a 120 Hz screen that keeps up with every stroke.

  • Music production

Thunderbolt handles audio interfaces and fast sample drives, and the M5 runs big Logic Pro sessions.

Think twice if…

  • You mostly watch, read and browse. An iPad Air or iPad does that just as well for far less money.
  • You’re on a tight budget. The Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro add more than $400 on top of an already high price.

Our take

The iPad Pro is the one to get if the iPad is your main computer and you want headroom for years. The Tandem OLED display is the best screen on any Apple device, Thunderbolt makes external drives and displays painless, and 12 to 16 GB of memory keeps pro apps and lots of windows running.

It’s also the most expensive way to iPad, and most people won’t use everything it offers. If you mostly read, watch and write, an iPad Air gets you most of the way for a lot less.
